This is a roundup of all the Black, Beauty, & Pop media I consumed this week.
Heard
“Navigating Broken Beauty Standards” ft. Candice Brathwaite-Aboderin by Naked Beauty
This was one of my favorite episodes because two of my faves joined together, Brooke (host) and Candice (guest), to talk about my favorite things. In this episode Candice talks about beauty standards, motherhood, anti-Blackness, fatphobia, her personal style evolution, and so much more. If you follow Candice online, you’ll enjoy her candor and humor, which doesn’t dim even when she is discussing difficult topics.

Ain't I a Beauty Queen?: Black Women, Beauty, and the Politics of Race by Maxine Leeds Craig
This book explores the intersection of race, class, politics, and beauty from the Civil Rights movement to the Black Power Movement. Craig explores beauty salons and magazines alongside personal interviews with people who bore witness to rapidly changing beauty standards for Black women. The price tag on the book is a bit much and it was not available in my local library or on Thriftbooks for <$30. I got a copy on Ebay for $12 in good condition, so do with that information what you will.
I also got three free Ebooks on the Palestinian fight for freedom and solidarity from Haymarket. I don’t know how long this will last, so grab your copies and donate to the publisher (if you can).

This stunning documentary of Bethann Hardison, the godmother of fashion, details her unique life and career. With a supporting cast of A-List celebrities, viewers learn about Hardison’s career as a model, agent, and respected fashion racial equity advocate. With Hardison at the helm, audiences watch the fashion world evolve, despite its resistance.
Bought
This week I went to Ulta with a list and under a time constraint. As a result, I replaced the skincare items I needed and bought nothing extra. Except for an under eye gel. Here’s a screenshot of my pickups and a link to the tweet that bullied me into adding an eye gel to my purchase.
